Radiofrequency Ablation for Arrhythmias

What is a radiofrequency ablation?

A radiofrequency ablation is a non-surgical procedure used to destroy the electrical pathway that causes an abnormal heart rhythm.

A doctor inserts a special electrode catheter into the heart and positions the catheter close to the abnormal electrical pathway. The doctor is able to pass radiofrequency energy through the catheter. The tip of the catheter heats up and destroys the small area of heart tissue that contains the abnormal pathway. This causes scar formation, and scar tissue can not transmit electrical impulses. Thus, the abnormal pathway is no longer able to produce arrhythmias.

Why does my child need this procedure?

Some arrhythmias may be life threatening or significantly interfere with a child's normal activities.

Many families prefer to have their child undergo a radiofrequency ablation rather than of take daily medication for a lifetime. Some medications may be ineffective or cause unpleasant side effects.

Radiofrequency ablation, which your doctor has recommended, is a relatively low risk procedure. If successful, the ablation may permanently cure the problem your child has been experiencing.

What happens during the procedure?

An EP study is performed to identify the area of the heart tissue that contains the abnormal pathway.

A special catheter is used to deliver radio-frequency energy. The tip of the catheter heats up and destroys the small area of tissue that contains the abnormal pathway.

What happens after the procedure?

Your child will be transported to the pediatric unit. He/She will need to lie flat in bed for about 4 hours in order to allow a seal to form at the catheter insertion site. Your child may eat and drink when fully awake.

Your child's heart rate, heart rhythm and blood pressure will be carefully monitored. The catheter insertion site (s) will also be checked frequently.

Your child may be discharged the same day or the next morning.
