Enalapril (e NAL a pril)
Also Called: Vasotec

Why does my child need this medicine?

  • Used to treat high blood pressure

  • Used to treat congestive heart failure

How should I give my child this medicine?

  • Enalapril is given one to two times a day

  • Give Enalapril at the same time every day.

  • Do not stop giving your child Enalapril unless told to do so by your child's doctor.

  • Carefully measure the dose as instructed by a nurse or pharmacist using a syringe or marked medicine dropper.

  • For infants, the medicine may be given in a nipple removed from a bottle.

  • Do not give your child any other medicines, including over-the-counter medications until your have checked with your child's doctor.

How should I store this medicine?

  • Store in the original bottle, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.

  • As with all medications, Enalapril should be kept out of the reach of children. If any child gets into the bottle and swallows Enalapril, call the Poison Control Center. (Indiana 1-800-382-9097)

What should I do if my child misses a dose of medicine?

  • It is important to give your child the prescribed dose of Enalapril at the same time every day.

  • Give the medicine as soon as your remember it. If it is almost time for the next dose, do not give the missed dose. Instead, give the next dose at the usual time.

  • Do not give two doses of Enalapril at the same time.

  • If more than two doses are missed, call your child's doctor.

What should I do if my child vomits the medicine?

  • Do not repeat the dose of Enalapril.

  • Give the prescribed amount of Enalapril at the next regular time.

  • If your child continues to vomit or develops diarrhea, call your child's doctor.

When should I call the doctor?

  • If you think you have given your child too much medicine.

  • If your child has: swelling of the face, hands, feet or ankles, difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, severe diarrhea, dehydration or rash.
