What is a transtelephonic cardiac event monitor?

• A monitor used to record your child's heart rate and determine if it is too fast, too slow, or irregular.

Why does my child need this device?

• The monitor can help the Cardiologist determine if your child's symptoms are caused by an irregular heart rhythm.

• To record an ECG at the time your child is actually having symptoms.

When does my child use the device?

• For thirty days your child should record all symptomatic events.

Who will teach us to use the device?

• A nurse will teach you and your child (if age appropriate) how to record an ECG and send the recording to a monitoring station for evaluation. A baseline ECG will be completed at the time of the training session. This provides the doctor with a normal ECG for comparison.

Who receives the transmissions of the recorded ECG?

• The recorded ECG is sent via the telephone to a monitoring station. A qualified ECG technician receives the call 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, and will speak to the person transmitting the recorded event. Your child's ECG will be reviewed immediately and a copy will be faxed to the cardiologist. The technician will tell you if the reading is of any concern. If so, the cardiologist will be notified.

Who will contact me about my child's ECG transmission?

• If your child's ECG transmission is abnormal the cardiologist or nurse will call immediately. If the ECG transmission is normal, you may not be notified.

What should we do if the monitor does not seem to be working?

• Call the telephone number on the monitor. A person at the monitoring facility will troubleshoot any problems.
