Potassium
(Also called: KCL, K-lyte, K-Dur, Rum-K, K-Tab, Slow-K)

Why does my child need this medicine?

  • To replace potassium lost from the body
  • To prevent potassium deficiency
  • Potassium is essential for proper functioning of the heart, kidneys, muscles, nerves and digestive system.

How should I give my child this medicine?

  • Usually Potassium is given two to four times a day with meals.
  • Give Potassium at regular intervals as instructed by your doctor, pharmacist or nurse.
  • Do not stop giving your child Potassium unless told to do so by your child’s doctor.
  • Carefully measure the prescribed dose using a syringe or marked measuring dropper.
  • Give with a small amount of water, juice, or formula to mask the unpleasant taste and minimize stomach upset.

How should I store this medicine?

  • Store in the original bottle at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and light.
  • As with all medications, Potassium should be kept out of the reach of children. If any child gets into the bottle and swallows Potassium, take the child to the Emergency Room immediately with the Potassium bottle. Please contact the local Poison Control Center (In Indiana 1-800-382-9097).

What should I do if my child misses a dose of medicine?

  • Give the missed dose as soon as you remember it, and give any remaining doses at evenly spaced intervals.
  • Do not give two doses of Potassium at the same time.

What should I do if my child vomits the medicine?

  • Do not repeat the dose of Potassium.
  • Give the prescribed amount of Potassium at the next regular time.
  • If your child continues to vomit or develops diarrhea, call your child’s doctor. HH Home
