Propranolol
(proe-PRAN-oh-lole)
Also called: Inderal
Why does
my child need this medicine?
- Used
to treat an irregular heartbeat.
- Decreases
the heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen demand of the heart.
How
should I give my child this medicine?
- Usually
Inderal is given before meals, three or four times a day.
- Do not
stop giving Inderal unless told to do so by your childs doctor.
- Carefully
measure each dose using a syringe or marked measuring dropper as instructed
by a nurse or pharmacist.
- For the
older child, a tablet is available. Do not crush the tablet.
- To decrease
stomach upset, mix liquid Inderal with a small amount of fruit juice
or with a spoonful of semi-solid food (applesauce, pudding, baby food).
- Do not
give your child any over the counter medications without consulting
a doctor.
How
should I store this medicine?
- Store
in the original bottle, away from heat, light, and moisture.
- Keep all
medicine out of the reach of children. If any child gets into the bottle
and swallows Inderal, take the child to the Emergency Room with Inderal
bottle. Call the Poison Control Center (In Indiana 1-800-382-9097).
What
should I do if my child misses a dose of medicine?
- Give
the missed dose as soon as you remember it.
- Give any
remaining doses at evenly spaced intervals.
- Do not
give two doses of Inderal at the same time.
What
should I do if my child vomits the medicine?
- Do
not repeat the dose of Inderal.
- Give the
prescribed amount of Inderal at the next regular time.
- If your
child continues to vomit or develops diarrhea, call your childs
doctor.
When
should I call the doctor?
- If your
child has: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cold hands and feet, lightheadedness,
insomnia, weakness, or decreased activity level.
