Spironolactone
(Speer-on-oh-LAK-tone)
Also called: Aldactone
Why does
my child need this medicine?
- Aldactone
is a diuretic used to decrease fluid accumulation (edema)
- Makes
the work of the heart easier
How
should I give my child this medicine?
- Usually
Aldactone in given once or twice a day.
- Do not
stop giving Aldactone unless told to do so by your childs doctor.
- Carefully
measure the dose as instructed by a nurse or pharmacist using a syringe
or marked measuring dropper.
- To decrease
stomach upset, give Aldactone with food or a small amount of juice.
- Aldactone
is good for 60 days. Any unused Aldactone should be discarded.
- To prevent
bedwetting, give Aldactone several hours before bedtime.
- Do not
give your child over the counter medications without consulting a doctor.
How
should I store this medicine?
- Store
in the original bottle, refrigerator, away from heat, light, and moisture.
- Keep all
medicine out of the reach of children. If any child gets into the bottle
and swallows Aldactone, call the Poison Control Center (In Indiana 1-800-382-9097)
What
should I do if my child misses a dose of medicine?
- It
is important to give the prescribed dose of Aldactone at about the same
time every day.
- Give the
missed dose as soon as you remember it. If more than two doses are missed,
call your childs doctor.
- Give any
remaining doses at evenly spaced intervals (at least 6 hours apart).
- Do not
give two doses of Aldactone at the same time.
What
should I do if my child vomits the medicine?
- Do
not repeat the dose of Aldactone.
- Give the
prescribed amount of Aldactone at the next scheduled time.
- If your
child continues to vomit or develops diarrhea, call your childs
doctor. It may be necessary to withhold or adjust the dosage of Aldactone.
When
should I call the doctor?
- If
your child has: swelling of the face, hands, feet or ankles, shortness
of breath, persistent vomiting, severe diarrhea, dehydration, or rash.
